Bad computer. July 1, 2010 J COCCHIARELLA MD 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
In April 2010 I bought this minilaptop as a birthday gift for my daughter.
So far, she has been unable to use it.
It doesn't work.
She called HP support and was told it would need a new hard drive.
IT IS BRAND NEW!!!
Neither she nor I are very computer savvy so we don't know what to do.
She says it is junk!
I wish I hadn't bought it.
I can't recommend it!
Definitively the netbook to buy June 25, 2010 Jules I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. It is an excellent, beautiful netbook. The nvidia card is just amazing; I had never seen such an image quality before. This is definitively the netbook to buy.
Exactly what I wanted June 17, 2010 J-P S (CA United States) I saw as my main uses for a netbook browsing the internet and viewing videos, thus my requirements: 1)(almost) 12-inch widescreen display, 2) nvidia graphics chip, 3) reasonably powerful CPU and 4) ability to run Ubuntu Linux. No need for a hot-running dual core for me - single core Atom does just fine. Video processing is for the most part offloaded to the graphics chip so mediocre-CPU-powerful-GPU seemed like a good combination for me.
Alas, Linux installation (Ubuntu 10.04) didn't go as smoothly as expected; the system wouldn't boot after installation. I wasn't of course the first one to encounter the problem so google soon found a remedy: after installation reboot and bring up the Grub boot loader menu (press down Shift during bootup); choose 'memory test'; run that for a while then reboot back to Grub menu, choose 'recovery mode'. Ubuntu should now boot ok. Now let Ubuntu download all available updates from the net and after that, everything should just work.
The display is great, the keyboard a functional compromise and I have no problems with the touchpad. DVD rips (from movies I own) run flawlessly. Only reason to drop one star is the trouble I had with getting Ubuntu to run on it.
Very Happy May 28, 2010 S. Buck (Chattanooga, TN United States) I looked around for a while debating whether to buy a regular laptop or a netbook. After researching many different manufacturers, laptops and netbooks, I decided to the get HP Mini 311 because it is a good netbook for the price. For those World of Warcraft players, with a memory upgrade (I upgraded the memory before I did anything else) this nebook will run WoW without a problem except in 25+ man raid/pvp groups. It gets a little choppy in those instances. The only drawback that I've noticed is when I am typing my wrist sometimes hits the touch pad but now that I'm used to the smaller keyboard and positioning of the touchpad, it doesn't happen often. Overall, if you are looking for a netbook, this is a great one!
Awesome "little" Netbook! April 8, 2010 Fat Computer Nerd (Ninja) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What can I say, this thing rocks!
I would recommend this netbook to anyone. The 11.6 inch screen makes a nice upgrade from the 10.1 inchers, I definitely notice the difference and feel I am squinting much less.
Use firefox and install some netbook optimizations (google firefox netbook themes) to make more room on the screen.
As for unlocking the ION to full, here is a walkthrough:
[...]
-all you need is a USB jump drive and a bit of computer literacy and it's rather easy.
Once you've done that, Install the FULL Ion drivers (Verde Notebook Release 197 beta)
[...]
(note this is the XP download)
Now uninstall your adobe flash activex and plugin, and then install the activex and plugin betas for Flash 10.1.3 (easy to find on google) One you do this you will get flawless 1080p playback on youtube!
Then go here and follow step by step instructions to get full HD playback for files on your PC:
[...]
After doing all this I can play almost anything, including flash HD, 720p and even 1080p on youtube, etc.
Unfortunately a non-tech savy person might struggle with getting this thing set up to play HD properly, but with a little googling anyone should be able to figure this stuff out.
Hope my review helped a few people!"
