Works Well July 28, 2010 A. J. Works well on my old Mac. Already had software in the Mac for burning, but the internal drive was for cd's only.
Just don't try to hook this up to a ethernet hub. Plug both cords directly into the 'puter, and it works fine.
Win 7 driver issues and it doesn't work July 25, 2010 marco (Europe) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
DVD worked well for couple of months, but then my laptop (running Win 7) stopped recognizing it. Several troubleshot operations later, it turns out that the DVD driver "expired" (Which was the first time I was faced with expired driver. My old laptop running XP has no problem recognizing external DVD). Samsung site does have driver update section, but for whatever reason drivers for this particular model (SE-S084C)are inaccessible for weeks. On the other hand, Microsoft happily lists this model as fully compatible plug-and-play no frills operation.
Samsung plus Microsoft crap = don't buy it!
Nero bait and switch - beware of compatibility claims July 22, 2010 R. LaMee (Phoenix, AZ United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love Samsung products and I think this DVD burner may be OK. However, one reason I bought this particular model was the bundled Nero software. Don't fall for it...
Come to think of it, I should have known better, because I've never had much success with Nero products. Here's the deal. The description says "compatible with PC and Mac." When I installed the bundled software, it informed me that the version I installed wasn't compatible with Windows Vista. Fine, but I'm using Windows 7. It advised me that could download and install the new, compatible version.
OK, I know that most Vista software is fine for Win7, so I click and wait. After awhile, I'm informed that the version I want is available by update. Unfortunately, there's no way to update it. After about a half hour of searching Nero's site, I find my only choice is to pay Nero for an "upgrade."
Meh... Nero has pulled this bait and switch tactic on me before and I'm not going for it. I've uninstalled the junk and I'll go with the native Win7 burning function.
I've verified that the drive does read, so I'm guesssing it will write. Just be aware that the rediculous Nero software is of NO VALUE. All things being equal, you may be better off buying a cheaper burner with no software at all.
Mac people, this is the one July 21, 2010 M. McGregor (Oxnard, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had despaired of finding a CD burner to replace the bad one in my 2005 Mini. Works great, as if I'm not even using an alternative drive. The only problem I've had is that when I try to burn from iTunes, the app crashes, so I had to download a (not as good) CD-burning program, but that's probably a computer problem, not the drive's fault.
not expensive quality July 20, 2010 RICHARD LITTLE (HONOLULU, HI, US) this samsung product worked as described, with good looks and ease of use. the value of a usb external is portability on several computers for me. Excellent product
