Product Description A "must have" accessory for all NetBook users. The SAMSUNG 8X Tray load External Slim DVD Writer is designed to provide the highest quality DVD functionality in a sleek design that is not much larger than the CD/DVD itself for PC and Mac users alike. Simply plug it into your USB port and you are ready to watch movies, install software, copy photos, play music or do anything that you desire. Furthermore, this model supports both 12 cm & 8 cm discs. And the Manual Disc Eject function can let the disc ejected even when the power is off.

Great product! March 19, 2010 E. C. Gavila (Albuquerque,NM Usa) Can't Complain. This product delivers. A word of caution though. if you own a laptop with limited USB ports, this puppy takes up two ports to run. My laptop has two ports plus. But when I plugged it in my computer gave me a power overload message. I had to purchase a USB cable/power outlet converter adapter & cord (An extension to reach the outlet for over a distant of 3 feet away)for a standard electric outlet to divert the power overload. Check with your local electronic supplier to see how much this would cost you. In my area it cost me an extra $60.00 for the two products. Do the math and then make your decision. Good luck.
Great external DVD drive March 18, 2010 skimetron (Palo Alto, CA USA) This DVD drive is lightweight and seems as small as it could possibly be. I use it with my new Windows 7 netbook as well as a six year old notebook with a broken internal DVD drive. On both computers it worked almost immediately after being connected to a USB port, with no software installation required.
Only one USB port is required for reading a CD or DVD, so I'm able to use mini USB cables I already own. Two USB ports are required to burn a CD or DVD, which is possible using the cable included with this drive (as long as you have two USB ports fairly close together).
A nice product for the money! March 15, 2010 Emilio Grande (New Jersey, USA) A nice product for the money!
Very useful for the owners of netbooks or those installing an OS on a diskless box (e.g. Linux automation or firewall box...)
Two dead units in a row March 13, 2010 smgsmc I read the strong positive reviews and ordered one. Straight out of the box, the eject button would not work, and I couldn't open the tray. I called the Samsung service dept (800 toll free) . They were very polite, but I got routed around four different groups before I reached the right support center. I went over the operating procedures with a tech, in case there was some special trick to opening the tray. He verified that I should simply press the eject button. We concluded I had a defective unit. I contacted Amazon to return it and asked for a replacement unit. That unit has exactly the same problem. I contacted Amazon to return it and asked for a refund this time. I don't know whether I'm unlucky or whether Samsung has a quality control problem. I'm heading off to the Post Office to send both units back. I'm glad I decided to wait to try out the second unit before shipping back the first ... only one trip to the Post Office, instead of two.
Great Drive March 12, 2010 PegasusNY (Upstate NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've had this drive for a week now and it's running great. Plugged it in and Vista recognized it immediately. Easy to install software.
It did NOT come with PowerDVD as it said in the description. As others have stated VLC Media Player is free and plays DVD's great. I have Windows Media Center on my laptop and it opened and played the DVD with no problem.
