4 out of 5 stars Works fine, easy setup, much faster than prior router   August 13, 2010
J. Callen (Cambridge, MA)
I bought this to replace a Linksys BEFW11S4 router, which had recently developed a habit of going catatonic and having to be power cycled.

The WAN port is connected to a Comcast-supplied cable modem; on the LAN side I have an Ethernet-attached laser printer, a wired Mac, and a couple of Airport Express wireless routers that typically have 2 or 3 laptops connected.

Setup was straightforward; Comcast runs DHCP on the WAN side, and the router connected immediately. I changed the LAN side IP address to match the staticly-configured devices on the LAN; I didn't even have to reboot the router for this change to take effect.

The one thing I couldn't seem to do was change the username (from the default "admin"), but at least I could change the password.

Performance is dramatically better than with the old router; before I was very lucky to get as much as 1Mbyte/second on downloads, now it's pretty consistently over 2.

It's only been running for 2 days, so I don't know yet how good the stability will be.

1 out of 5 stars Windows XP ONLY Forget Vista/7/OSX   June 7, 2010

We got one of these for our home office. Seems to work alright except for the fact that they seem utterly incapable of providing a client that works on anything more advanced than Windows XP. We have multiple people who work remote that were forced to reformat their home machines just so they could connect to our network.

I personally tried 4 different alternative software vendors to see if we could find something better than the crap-tastic "pro-safe" software they give you, and none of them seem able to communicate with the FVS338 (standard IPSec tunneling right? Wrong) I guess like everything else netgear makes, it just doesn't work the way it should.

I guess maybe we'll keep this piece of garbage around as a switch, but we'll have to go drop more cash on a worthwhile VPN to layer on top of it.

4 out of 5 stars FVS338 is great   June 7, 2010

I bought this router to upgrade my parents from an old FVS118v1. Before this upgrade, their hi-speed internet was bottle-necked to 1MB/s. Now, it's not uncommon for them to get 20MB/s. Hooray for newer technology! The only cons that I have found in the last month are that the router's home menu is a little bit difficult to navigate, and I don't like that there is no upnp support. Otherwise, this is a solid product once the firmware updates are installed.

5 out of 5 stars Reliable and Easy Setup   February 6, 2010

Easy setup even for mixed pc/mac/xbox360 usage. Very reliable. Most important - bandwidth beats those cheap routers. Had a $35 router and when anyone used the xbox360 live - you noticed. Now... never notice!

5 out of 5 stars Huge improvement in speed   October 1, 2009

I have a very simple network to allow 3 computers and a Yamaha music keyboard to share the cable internet and to share files between the computers. For the last couple years I've been using a Netgear FVS318 and have been very happy with it. My cable company has claimed to increase my internet speed over that time but I could see no change. I finally decided the FVS318 was maxed out. When I installed the FVS338 the download speed from [...] went from slightly over 5 Mbps to consistently over 20. Well worth the cost of this device.
