Amazing laptop! September 8, 2010 T. Carranza I recomend this laptop for everyone who want portability, performance and excellent design, one of the best laptops in the market, more value for your money!!!
The touchpad is the best designed for more, only you need read the instruction is a multi-touch technology and you can use all surface for move the pointer, you can disable if necessary too.
you can use for horizontal and vertical movement, only you need use 2 fingers, and move it in the wanted direction.
You can use for zoom in and zoom out your images or Windows desktop, is wonderful...
good but not great September 5, 2010 H. V. LU 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After reading many review online about this model and searching for the best price for it. I initially picked Amazon because they are the cheapest with no tax and free shipping, but since Amazon increased their price by $66 before I could buy it. I went with [...], I rather buy it direct and if I don't like it return it hassle free. Plus being a student, I got a discount from [...] which is a little cheaper than Amazon. I'm not a computer expert, but this is my opinion after using it for a week.
The trackpad - from many reviews I've read, there's is a problem with it, but from my experience it works fine. The right and left clicker works good. Two things I notices with it, first the two fingers scrolling works fine most of the time, but sometime unresponsive. The second thing is the trackpad mounting on the surface. On the edge all around it, if you look closely you can see the inside of the laptop. As if the trackpad is not perfectly made to fit leaving a thin gap. I think in the long run it will collect dirt or moisture in that area causing problem, but for now it fine. Just don't clean or wipe it with something wet.
The DVD optical drive - The eject button is hard to open. Unlike some laptops I've used, you need to force the button in perfectly straight to get it to open and it's harder if you don't have nails. Most laptops I've used, a light touch is all you need. It could just be this laptop.
The Laptop speed - I think almost all the reviews expressed how speed it is, and it is fast, but not super fast. It's a little faster than my 1 year old hp dv6. I compare by opening same program, window start up, and other multitasking. It is faster, but not much. Actually I timed the window start up and it took about 55 secs from the time I push the power button to the point log on screen appears. This is my first intel i5 processor and I thought it would be twice or three time faster than my old laptop which has an AMD Athlon duo core processor but it wasn't. I don't know if I upgraded it to a i7 processor will it then be that fast.
The Battery life - Awful, the advertised life is 6.5 hours. I have timed it from 100% fully charge to 8%(it will shutdown at this point) and I got 2 hrs 42 mins. I was installing software and using internet while testing the battery. I don't know if this is heavy usage or light. So I tested it again with just using internet and it came to be the same time. It will not exceed 3 hrs. I would expected 3.5 - 4 hrs from 6.5 hrs advertised. I have not try this, but may be dimming the screen to lowest setting and not using it at all will increase battery life.
The Finger reader - This feature works great no problem at all. I think this feature is just bells and whistles. It sounds great and high tech., but a regular password will do. I was ask to provide both password and finger print and once your finger print is on it you can't reset it or I just don't know how to. If more than one user on this laptop, I think it may causes confussion or problem.
The keyboard - I have small and short fingers, and the keys are spread out too far apart for me. I'm not use to the new keys, but the button feel fine. It's not slippery and noises are minimum. I wish it has the feature on my old hp dv6 with touch button volume, wireless connection, and maybe more.
pros - light weight, thin, nice design, fast processor
cons - trackpad good but needs improvement, battery(is a lie)
The things that stands out with this laptop are the design and it size. The design and curvature of it, is very nice. Its light, thin, and compact. It looks like a netbook just wider. I wish hp would cover the bottom with an aluminum, that would make it look better.
All the model of the dm4 seem to have the same spec. I can't tell the difference, but this one is pretty good. From all the review I've read, I had high expectation from this laptop. Don't get me wrong, this is the best laptop I have had, but I thought it would be flawless or close to. The perfect mixed of compact, power, and beauty, but no laptops are perfect.
Overall, this is a very good laptop. I highly recommended. I hope this review help you in your decision in buying a dm4.
HP does a cheap work September 1, 2010 Alex~JJ (WA USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I personally own a macbook pro 13", and love it. I was trying to find one with reasonable price for my dad's entertainment. I only fav Intel processor, any AMD is out of my consideration. After researching on many websites, I saw this one on amazon. Its package is very nice. I also saw other reviewer mentioning they bought it for a better deal at Office Depot. I got the laptop for around 700 (including tax) on the last day of the special sale. It was a hot sale item. I had to drive 40 min to another city to get it.
When I finally got home and opened the box, I was very happy with the whole design, it looks very thin and sleek. I was starting to set up the profile and everything. My 1st click on the trackpad, IT POPPED UP! The size of the trackpad is slightly smally than the cut on the laptop. I picked up the trackpad, and could see every wire underneath it inside of the laptop. I thought I was unlucky to purchase one of the few defected ones. So I immediately called office depot. They said they are all sold out in IL state. They had to transfer one from Indiana for me to exchange. I went in and exchanged it today. The manager was so nice to ask me to inform them if everything runs smmothly this time. I unboxed the 2nd laptop. And surely I checked the trackpad this time. It has the same problem! The trackpad is partially glued with the cut space, but I could still clearly see the tiny space between them, and the surfaces of the side of the trackpad and and the board next to it is not on the same leverl, uneven.
What can I say. You get what you paid for. Even though it's a nice package overall, but HP did a very cheap work of the making. I would not consider HP again in the future.
Better than expected August 30, 2010 Houston2010 The laptop was better than expected. I wasnt sure about the touchpad bc of all the reviews but it works good for me. The features for the price were exceptional. I like the small, sleek design. The only thing I wish it had was a light for the keyboard. I would definitely recommend it!
exactly what I wanted August 28, 2010 leah I love this computer! It is super powerful, lightweight, stylish and has awesome battery power. Plus it runs pretty quietly and doesnt get heat up much even when its really working. I have it plugged into an lcd monitor as well as a large HD television and it plays beautiful graphics. It is super zippy with the Adobe CS4 suite and hasnt crashed on me once yet.
I was originally thinking of buying a desktop but when I found this laptop on sale for $600 after coupons and rebates, I couldnt turn it down. I keep it plugged into my monitor most of the time, but im so glad I went with the laptop as I've found I actually use the portability way more than i thought.
Only con is the trackpad occasionally goes a bit haywire. Ive noticed other people mentioning this as well. I downloaded the newest drivers but still having occasional problems. Hopefully it is a software problem that can be fixed down the line. And for now, it still isnt enough of a problem to keep me from giving this laptop 5 stars.
